Theft of Pickup Truck Tailgates is on the Rise

We were surprised to learn that the theft of pickup truck tailgates is on the rise in the United States. So we decided to write this article to highlight some of the facts in the increased tailgate thefts and also to provide you with some tips on how to keep your pickup truck safe.

Pickup truck sales have been increasing fairly significantly, which is a good thing. However, this has also led to increased theft of pickup truck tailgates. According to information from the National Insurance Crime Bureau reports of stolen tailgates have increased from 831 in 2012 up to 1,090 in 2013. That means that the theft of pickup truck tailgates has increased 31 percent in less than two years.

There were three southwestern U.S. states that had by far the highest number of claims. In fact, these three states accounted for 67 percent of all the claims during this time period. Arizona was one of them with 207 tailgate thefts, California was another with 334 and the state with the highest number of thefts was Texas with 752. Texas also had the three worst cities for tailgate theft and six out the top worst cities were found in Texas.

This increase in thefts has created a high demand for replacement tailgates, which has led to an increase in value. A top-end tail gate with a backup camera and other electronics can cost as much as $3,000. The stolen tailgates often end up for sale on online websites such as Ebay or Craigslist where the thieves try to profit off from them.

The National Insurance Crime Bureau claims that it can be fairly easy for thieves to quickly steal a truck tailgate without specialized tools. The best way to avoid theft is to install an anti-theft locking mechanism on your pickup truck. However, there are other methods of protecting your truck that do not involve installing a lock such as parking tight up against a wall or parking in a secure garage.
