Biking is a great form of exercise and a lot of fun. Especially if you have a great location with great scenery. Luckily, there are hundreds of miles of mountain biking trails near Albert Lea, MN. There are a lot of people, even locals, who are unaware that many of these trails even exist. We think that is a shame, so we are going to use this post to highlight some of the best biking trails in Minnesota.
The Shooting Star State Trail: This rural landscape trail starts in the city of LeRoy in Mower County and travels north through Lake Louise state park before heading west. There is a paved portion of the trail that stretches almost 20 miles. This trail is known for its beautiful prairies, the Rustic Retreat Wildlife Management Area and Lake Louise. This trail is very popular for biking, hiking and inline skating in the summer and is popular for cross country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.
The Heartland State Trail: This trail was previously a railroad that was later converted into the trail after the railroad shut down. This was one of the very first rail-to-trail projects in the county. It consists of 49 miles of trail that are truly multi-use. Everything from mountain biking, to horseback riding and even snowmobile riding is allowed here. From the trail you get a very scenic view on lakes, rivers, streams and forests. In order to ride horses at this trail you will need to purchase a horse pass and in order to snowmobile on this trail you will need to purchase a snowmobile state trail sticker.
St. Croix State Park: The St. Croix State Park is the biggest state park in Minnesota. It stretches over 34,000 acres and two big rivers: The St. Croix River and Kettle River. The great thing about this trail system is that there is so much more to do than just mountain bike. You can go camping, fishing on the rivers, ride horses, snowmobile and more. Taking a trip to St. Croix State Park is just like having your own 34,000 acre playground.
